Byzantine Sacred Art: Orthodox Icons and IconographyIconographer's Inspiration: Kosovo and Metohija, Part 1 |
Serbian JerusalemSerbian region of Kosovo and Metohija (the word "Metohija/Metochia", derived from "metoh" or "metoch", that is an integral part of the full and proper name of this province, is a centuries old term which denotes the land that belongs to Serbian Orthodox Church) is often referred to as Serbian Jerusalem or Serbian Holy Land. With over 1,400 Orthodox churches and monasteries, built thousand of years ago by Serbian kings and rulers, with the Patriarchate of Serbian church situated in the heart of Kosovo and Metochia and sacraments dating back to beginnings of the memory of Serbian nation and its first collective baptism, Kosovo is the center of Serbian spirituality, the heart of our nation and an endless source of inspiration for Orthodox iconographer. It should than come as no surprise that the very thought of this region being hijacked from Serbia is hard to bear for the greatest majority of Serbs. But this is exactly what is being done. |
