Serbian Jerusalem

Serbian region of Kosovo and Metohija (the word "Metohija/Metochia", derived from "metoh" or "metoch", that is an integral part of the full and proper name of this province, is a centuries old term which denotes the land that belongs to Serbian Orthodox Church) is often referred to as Serbian Jerusalem or Serbian Holy Land. With over 1,400 Orthodox churches and monasteries, built thousand of years ago by Serbian kings and rulers, with the Patriarchate of Serbian church situated in the heart of Kosovo and Metochia and sacraments dating back to beginnings of the memory of Serbian nation and its first collective baptism, Kosovo is the center of Serbian spirituality, the heart of our nation and an endless source of inspiration for Orthodox iconographer. It should than come as no surprise that the very thought of this region being hijacked from Serbia is hard to bear for the greatest majority of Serbs. But this is exactly what is being done.

Most dangerous region in the world

Today Kosovo and Metochia are still a part of Serbia, but the forces eager to cut it off by uprooting its Serbian heritage and by systematically erasing its Christian face are growing distinctly more ruthless. Ever since United Nations took the province over (after three-month long NATO bombardment of Serbia ended) in summer of 1999, forcing Serbian officials out and enabling the rule of Albanian Muslim insurgents and heads of KLA (UCK in Albanian), Kosovo has become one of the most volatile and dangerous regions in the world.

Brutal Muslim rule

Since then, most of the Christian population, mainly Serbs, have been ethnically cleansed - expelled, missing or dead. Those who remain are forced to live in virtual ghettoes, without the most basic freedoms like a freedom of movement, with no jobs or prospects for employment, their schools and hospitals destroyed, having their children killed off daily, on their doorsteps and in their own backyards. The widespread heroin production and drug trafficking supplying western European and North American markets, arms dealing, prostitution and white slave trafficking are the main, if not the only Kosovo "industry". Divided into impenetrable family clans, Albanian Muslims rule the province through the heads of their clans specializing in one of the main criminal activities. Brutal treatment of Christian population occasionally explodes into full-fledged murderous orgies, burning and pillaging everything on their way. The last of such blitzkriegs, aimed at killing and purging remaining Serbian residents, was staged and orchestrated by KLA leaders on March 17-20, 2004. It became known as Kosovo Kristallnacht, for close resemblance to Hitler's attempt to rid Germany of its Jewish residents in one fell swoop.
